Background

Originally, this website was getting very little organic traffic and relying on paid traffic. It was also very small in terms of the number of items it sells, ranging from $50 to $300 dollars each.

When they joined our managed SEO program, they had invested in SEO a few times but had never really gotten serious.

Here were many opportunities for growth!

SEO Audit

In the first case, we always perform a search engine optimization audit. We’re looking for anything that could hinder ranking.

One good thing about this site is that it had very little content nor links and they weren’t blocked due to anything.

Keyword Research – The “Easy Wins” Analysis

We always look for keywords that are starting to rank on the search engines, but not quite at the top yet to kick off our keyword research.

Traffic wins with these targets usually occur rapidly because we can usually boost them up.

76 potential targets were found mostly in the lower half of the first, second, and third pages, with CPMs between .60 and $2.50.This URL was a mix of product-specific pages and category pages.

Several high-priority objectives were selected with the customer, resulting in rapid growth!

Keyword Research – Competitive Gap Analysis

Using the Competitive Gap Analysis, you can find which keywords are ranking higher for your competitors and which ones are not.

Good keyword research will always help you come up with new keywords that you can easily target with content.

You often get a ton of product names that you may not sell when you run the content gap analysis on e-commerce sites.

Our client works closely with us on these and we pick keywords together to ensure we’re targeting keywords related to the items in their inventory.

Here’s a keyword we found that we could make long articles for!

The SEO Strategy & Execution

The campaign was pretty typical for us as we built consistent content that linked back to the site.

For Months 1 – 3, we kept strategy the same:

  • 1X Medium Diversity Links: We built in-content links focused on easy wins, using diverse anchor text.
  • 4X Blog Content 1000 words: We focused on writing content targeting keywords with good volume related to the niche products.

Traffic started to improve when we started:

Going Forward

We’ll be able to do a lot of surgical link building now that these quality pieces of content are ranking (AND they are valuable pieces of content, as opposed to just product pages), and we can push these even higher.

What’s great is that there’s a lot of new content to work with… and it’s starting to make a difference!

We see Google engulfing the floodgates by following this strategy – This is giving us insight into the massive potential we can target in the future:

Takeaways

In order to rank for your valuable keywords, you will need to write longer-form blog posts.

Having the right content on the right pages makes getting good links a lot easier. Once you have that, you can essentially do an internal link in between product pages.
